SA Advertising & Marketing: Is animation more profitable now than it was back then?

I happen to catch an episode of "Maggs on Media" on etv eNews 24-hour channel last night. Pretty much the general audience these days is experiencing an overload of animation towards our conventional advertising viewing on tv lately. Most of the brands our parents used to feed us more than 20 years ago are starting to have this Disney animation type 3D playstation treatment. We talking from common brands like energy coffee drink like MILO, LUCK STAR, Rama, OROS, OMO, FLORO margarine to name but a few. Even petroleum companies like CALTEX and tyre brands like MICHELLIN are in on this hyper 3D animation frenzy.

Don't get me wrong, technology is rooted in my system and I cringe with enthusiasm when new toys around video and photography come into the market. But somehow watching the media show on eTv got me wondering. Jeremy presented the new PPC Cement television commercial. Its very well done and shot around the most popular areas of Johannesburg, folks in media will recognize those areas. I caught a less than 3 second glimpse of the company logo that created the special effects. Pixel-something based around Joburg that does high-end quality (3D)animation.

6 years ago whilst I was at Hunt Lascaris I got introduced to one of the biggest players in the animation industry. Most commonly used back then was VIDEO-LAB based around Randburg. The guys have/had done many award winning work for years and its always been in the cutting edge with quality advertising work. A few years go by and you informed that another animation house is up and running in the same building as VIDEO-LAB. Back then who owned who was the least of my worries, but I always kept my ear on the ground.

Fast forward to 2009, my close friend Lumko Dukashe happens to be the production company behind the IEC television commercial with Bad Boy T and a few extra celebes. Quality is off the hook, but yet again there are special effects areas towards the end of the commercial where they used another animation company I had never heard of. It now boils down to my understanding, perhaps naive, that during 2006 to around 2010, several new animation houses have sprung up.

I write this article knowing that I have NOT done my full extensive research on knowing how many animation houses are around South Africa, but goodness I do sense and see the increase on this highly expensive profession in media. Perhaps for second, lets imagine, during the world wide recession that was happening, more white owned animation studios came to being. I think what I'm trying to get to is - where on earth do the owners or investors get the money to fund and raise such high technologically advanced companies during a very volatile economic environment? Have our parent's brands, products they used to feed us back then, now grown with hefty fat cheque books to spend comfortably on any special effects needed for to tell a story or sell a product?

I think by now anyone who's seen an iPhone, an iPad or an iPod knows that Apple is a premium expensive brand, and that same brand resonates throughout the movie-making, advertising industries on a global scale. Apple have dissected the Stratosphere in technology and are gaining momentum each month with record sales each quarter. Now out of curiosity, should I be led to believe that many of the SA animation studios we get to see interviewed on tv are fly by night or humble evidence that the SA advertising industry is in a healthy economic state? To run/own an animation house needs millions, let alone the human resources - the guys and girls who spent thousands on tuition fees to learn how to create 3D objects and know how to animate. The Apple machines, the Apple servers, the animation softwares, these run in the millions, is animation more profitable now than it was back then? Let's assume it is.

I try as much as I can to watch Media Matters on SABC3, Saturdays 18h30. You get to see the key advertising guru players being interviewed and truth be told I find it fascinating since I no longer am involved on that ad industry, but out of curiosity it amazes me and proudly pleased that the black brothers and sisters are turning heads and have senior positions. During my early years in the creative industry, there used to be (speculate) one black person in every 10 white folks in the team, now watching media matters, the table has flipped the script. Here too I hope there's more black animators compared to 15 years ago.

Anyway here's to a starting point to investigate something that got me wondering and sadly, this is an expensive expensive industry and I truly try educate my clients everyday as much as possible to the possibilities that are here and now.

"Facebook has been growing by leaps and bounds and with over 500 Million Users it's no longer just for kids nor can it be ignored. I've noticed that more and more companies are not only staking out a presence on Facebook, but they are even using their Facebook Pages in lieu of their corporate sites when they advertise on TV and in print...

One thing I came to the realization of last year was that while we may flatter ourselves in thinking that our customers love to come to our sites on a regular basis, chances are the vast majority don't visit your corporate site each day. Think about it. You probably go to most corporate sites when you either have a problem or you're ready to buy something new. It's probably not your daily hangout. You probably don't think to go there to "connect" with the company. On the other hand people go to Facebook EVERY DAY with the sole purpose of connectingt with others.

Like it or not, Facebook is a major force on the internet and if you choose to ignore it then that probably says a lot about how "in touch" you are with your customers."

Volume vs Service vs Profit

Some of us living around JHB north do sometimes notice the guys sitting outside popular home improvement stores like Builders Warehouse the likes, and if you look through the yellow pages you see hundreds of garden services companies around northern JHB.

Question: Why does the guy on the street (for example) charge R100 for a full day of garden services (without his own garden tools), as opposed to R160 charged by the garden services company who hires 3 to 5 guys and has all the tools to do the entire house within 2 hours?

The garden company charges only R160 with minimum 3 people, and R100 goes to the single guy who doesn't even have the tools to do the job. The single guy is more expensive and also takes the whole day to do your yard, at best he's also served food, but the garden company has 3 employees who do the job in less than 2 hours and are not even given a glass of water.

A business conundrum that surprised me today. What say you?

The Cheese has changed

Hi folks…
With the unfortunate series of challenges that hit the business over a month ago, sadly Magic Mirror had to close the Bryanston (Johannesburg) doors at the end of November 2010. We shipped out all our furniture and equipment and now had to rethink new ways of continuing with our God-given talents.

The good news is that the company did not shut down but we now had to change the whole model of how the business previously operated and flip that over and venture into areas we truly felt were still an open playing field. We obviously had to go head-on into treacherous new grounds and unforgiving challenges that popped up everyday with little to no hope of recovery, or smooth sailing and my goodness its been a test of serious endurance.

With the fantastic support of the few clients we were left with, the company still maintains its passion & enthusiasm towards photography and we truly are still motivated, inspired and we aim to surpass our previous goals and dreams.

We are still shooting, that's recently evident, but we come with a new play towards how we now approach photography. We are full steam going ahead with on-location shoots that which has brought unimaginable fun and excitement into our photography. Personally for me, on-location shoots have become the new "studio" I've been praying for and has opened up dynamic and endless possibilities with what you can create within a given space - so much fun!

Some of our recent assignments were, a 21st Birthday Party celebration at the luxurious Marion On Nicole Hotel in Hurlingham, somewhere around Sandton in Johannesburg; a ladies only Tea Party on the banks of the Vaal River in the Free State; two 'at-home' family photo shoots (one in Pimville Soweto and another in Randburg about a block or two away from the Olivedale Clinic); and yesterday's shoot at Club Neh in Alexandra. We also not leaving out several 'studio' photo shoots we shot in Sandton a few weeks back over some Sundays.

Some of the key lessons we learning to improve on is relationships. In my opinion, never has there been a time when business owners, colleagues and competitors truly had to embrace the true meaning of relationship building since the World Cup. We've made many many mistakes and errors as a business but one of the most crucial is burning the relationship bridges. As big as the planet is to support intuitive methods of striving for success, come money or no money, you will be left with a relationship that needs to be managed, even during happiness or grief.

We humbly take the hard lessons of 2010, stick them on our door fridge and cleverly maneuver our new goals onto the chess board but always gazing at our past mistakes to always remember 'what-not-to-do'.

Its funny, sad and strange how people from the outside look at you through a glass window and all of sudden have the consoling answers and spirit to drive you back into a motivation path when you lost for answers - it does not help! And the real truth of the matter is that they talk like they read it from a text book or saw it in a movie and think that what they say will help solve your emotional/business crisis by simply snapping fingers and saying the one liner.

Something has been troubling me since I joined Magic Mirror. Apparently folks at large have a tendency to believe that the more busy you are with your company and business, you most likely are making bucket loads of money - not true! Why does society think like that?

Wouldn't it be obvious that the more you work, the more poorer you are and more debt you accumulate to trying to getting the best paying jobs or accounts? The wealthiest people I've even come across spent more sleepless nights in the early days of their companies trying to survive and to be inspired. I think leaders in general and business leaders need to address these nonsensical ideas and help the younger generation to see the real truth behind sweating for your money.

The day I post up photos of myself sipping whiskey in Camps Bay in Cape Town, with little to nothing to do, that's when I will have enough money to pay someone else to do the mundane work, otherwise get the fcuk of my case and stop watching MTV and go follow your dreams and create your own wealth, see what its like working for yourself!

Every year at school is worth a flashback! Flashback in real life is possible only by means of a refresher of treasured memories. Yearbooks serve this very purpose. The Ex-Blocker is a plugin for Firefox and Chrome that literally filters your ex out of the internet for you. Simply feed it their first and last names, their Twitter username, their Facebook profile info and their blog URL, and it takes care of the rest. Sure, photos can slip through the cracks, I'm sure. And you'll have to set up an email filter yourself if you want to cut off contact completely.

But this might just stop you from seeing that picture of the one person who used to love you that would remind you that your time with them was the best days of your life that you will never, ever get back because you are stupid and selfish and fucked up badly in a way that is completely irreparable. And that would be, like, a total downer.

Judging by the promo shots, Tulip looks like it's available in red, white, and murky orange flavors. You can currently only get it in the UK and Europe, with promises of US distribution "in the near future." Hopefully that means before summer's over; there's nothing that would fill out a picnic basket better than a spill-proof, single-serving glass of murky orange. And by "picnic basket" I mean both my right and left hands, inappropriately early on a weekday.

ISSUU seems to be having new magazines and books that need tremendous amounts of exposure. Many of the magazines i've never heard of.

Tonight I started looking for my old varsity magazine brands I used to collect, like ESPN Magazine, WallPaper, ESQUIRE, Communication Arts, GQ, MensHealth, etc. And I noticed something interesting, none of those magazines I used to die for, no longer feature freely on other websites. Those brands have matured and have the necessary financial resources to invest and develop their own online portals and flash flip through pages. If it at all they feature on ISSUU, most likely it'll be a feature article and not the rest of the 160+ pages we usually buy at EXCLUSIVE Books. Anyway I beg to wonder... are people still into buying the same brand at current 75% more than what it was 10 years ago? What set you back R35 then, now the glossy magazine is R85 at best. Do we still have a culture of buying magazines or has the iPhone & BlackBerry/ FaceBook & Twitter / Google & YouTUBE stolen or created the options to abandon old habits?

Yes we know technology is the future, but what about the printed paper? With the recent launch of the Apple iPad, uplifting the handheld reader from the Amazon Kindle, should we rejoice and be happy with the latest means to read books, surf the magazine or basic newspaper news now in one hand? Do you reckon our next generation kids will use crayons on durable flat screens than the conventional paper?

Is the future here already - I hear him knocking outside with my new SONY Bravia LCD 3D HDtv with two free 3D viewing Oakley type glasses ;-)
Go figure.

Hey Folks... ( I know Mashabela is gonna whip me for this...)

A few weeks back a client forwarded me a link to go check out a brochure/ catalogue online for one of the European soccer teams. The client needed something similar done locally. So to see the full brochure I was introduced to ISSUU - http://issuu.com

Somehow odd names for websites never settle well with me, but I clicked on and checked out the link. To my surprise this somehow looked like an online breakthrough, but several years back I remember seeing something just like this but more for international brands like cosmetic brands and fragrances launching new products and stuff. After seeing what i had to see i dug a bit further as to what the hell is ISSUU and boy it got more interesting.

I won't type out all what I went through on this site cause at times I like to go in and try to break a website by seeing what it is it can or cannot do - a lot of techy stuff I do. But eventually I decided to load two PDF files I was recently involved with to see pretty much what a layman can do with this and it gets more interesting. See attached pics.

Ok I'm sold! To load the MASHABELA 3MB file took about a minute, than another two minutes for the ISSUU server to do what it has to do with the file before it appears on the shelf. Now I haven't been this much excited about a website since the Soccer Online Calendar I sent a few weeks back, and till today that Soccer Calendar still astounds everyone who sees it. But ISSUU has a fantastic product that allows you to quickly throw in a PDF, view it like a magazine, flick through the pages like you sitting on the couch, zoom into the pictures and also watch video within a page with added features, you can also download the PDF. Ok if that's not amazing then I might as well try a new brand of dog biscuits.

Ok the possibilities are there. Instead of an online photo gallery, we now can do flip pages of pictures and also include SOUND & VIDEO & WEBSITE LINKS into the pages. Now how cool is that!?! Guys who are afraid of the printing costs can now share their products, their business ideas, their catalogues/ brochures... just about anything that can be sent via email in multiple pages but now viewed elegantly like a magazine online and here's the best part for now - its FREE!!!

ADOBE CS5 comes with the latest PDF upgraded features, but somehow I don't think it can live up to this - I stand corrected. But from this online APP, apparently a lot of new business owners will be keen to showcase their documents online, but with a bit of flair & lifestyle attached to it. My votes in, next time I need to showcase one of my recent brochure/ catalogue online, ISSUU takes the biscuit.
